The GRE is one of the exams held by universities where the language of instruction is English in more than 160 countries, especially in the United States and Turkey. Those who want to do a master’s and doctorate can take this exam. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is one of the exams for those who want to pursue an academic career in engineering and social sciences.
The first universities to hold the GRE in 1939 were Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University. The exam is designed to measure students’ critical thinking, analytical writing, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning skills.
The GRE General Test is mandatory for all prospective graduate students. Some universities require the GRE Subject Test score. ETS (Educational Testing Service) organizes the exam. The exam is conducted in two ways, face to face and online.
● Those who want to do master’s and doctorate degrees in engineering and social sciences at universities abroad and in English-speaking universities in Turkey could apply for the GRE.

The GRE General Test is based on a written exam held three times a year in October, November and February. The online exam is held at regular intervals. The right to take the online exam is 5. The GRE Subject Test is based on a written exam held in September, October, and April.
Exam fees vary according to exam types. The GRE General Test is $255, while the GRE Subject Test is $150.
The GRE General Test measures numerical and verbal skills. These skills are measured in 6 sections under three main headings. The GRE General Test, which is compulsory for graduate education, consists of Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.
● Analytical Writing: It measures analytical writing and critical thinking skills and the expression of claims and evidence by exemplifying the causes.
● Verbal Reasoning: It aims to identify skills such as reasoning, figurative meaning, understanding the author’s intention. It measures the ability to summarize and understand the text.
● Quantitative Reasoning: It measures competence in geometry, arithmetic, and data analysis.
The GRE Subject Test is for undergraduate students who completed Math, Psychology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English Literature departments. GRE scoring varies by section. Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are scored between 130-170. The scoring of the Analytical Writing section is between 0-6. The validity period of the exam is five years since July 2016.
